Hey, I Like That Actor! Tom Hanks. (Part 2)

The second part of Tom Hanks movie study.

"Sleepless In Seattle"

Second and in my opinion the best of the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan pairings.  The kid sells the whole story.  He is great without being sappy or too cute.

"Philadelphia"

Tom won his first Oscar as a gay man battling AIDs and discrimination.

I love the scene with his mother played by the incredible Joanne Woodward.

Sarah Beckett: [to Andrew] Well, I didn't raise my kids to sit in the back of the bus. You get in there and you fight for your rights, okay?

"Forrest Gump"

His second Oscar win.  This is also the movie that brought Gary Sinise to the forefront for me.  Love him too.

Forrest Gump: In the land of China, people hardly got nothing at all.
John Lennon: No possessions?
Forrest Gump: And in China they never go to church.
John Lennon: No religion too?
Dick Cavett: Ah. Hard to imagine.
John Lennon: Well it's easy if you try, Dick.

"Apollo 13"

Something I have noticed about astronauts is that they are all attractive.  They have to be physically fit, super smart and somehow they recruit very photogenic folks.  It is hard to make a movie based on a true story enthralling and suspenseful.  They do it here.

"Toy Story"

Love this movie.  When my son was little, they had the action figures at a fast food place.  The character's names lent for some fun conversations.

"Look!!  I got a Buzz and a Woody!"

"That Thing You Do"

His directorial debut.  I love snarky Tom Hanks in this movie.

"Saving Private Ryan"

I saw this in the theater and the opening scene at the beach was almost like an Imax movie.  Very intense.

"You've Got Mail"

Last of the Meg Ryan collaborations.  Very sweet movie.   I remember being on AOL at the time.  It was just getting huge.  Is it still out there?

"Toy Story 2"

Hard to top the first one, but this one is equally awesome.

"Green Mile"

Stephen King and Tom Hanks.  Awesome adaptation, incredible acting and Mr. Jingles.  I might get teary just thinking about it.

"Cast Away"

If you take away Helen Hunt's bad Memphis accent, this movie is just about perfect.  With most of it being just Tom, it is really the movie equivalent of watching an actor read the phone book.  He is great.

"Road To Perdition"

This was one of the first movies in a long time that didn't feel like a Tom Hanks movie.  He really did lose himself in it.  Great movie, sad ending.

"Catch Me If You Can"

Carl Hanratty: Well, would you like to hear me tell a joke?
Earl Amdursky: Yeah. Yeah, we'd love to hear a joke from you.
Carl Hanratty: Knock knock.
Earl Amdursky: Who's there?
Carl Hanratty: Go f**k yourselves.

Looks like there will be a part 3.  See you tomorrow.
